Commenters: Please restrict comments to that which pertains to your professional dealings with those being commented upon. Facts and first-hand accounts wanted, not opinions.

Tell us how you got into the gallery, tell us how or why you left the gallery, tell us about your studio visits, tell us who won't pay or pays only after much cajoling, tell us who loves your work until it doesn't sell, tell us who supports your work despite your weak sales, tell us who won't return work or say where work has disappeared to, tell us who is awesome, tell us who tries to influence your work or presure you to make work you would rather not make, tell us who abuses power, tell us with whom you feel a sense of reciprocal commitment.

Information for Artists: Artists, please e-mail names of critics, curators, and dealers to be added.

You can have thousands of readers per day and not have any comments. Don't feel bad if not many people comment. Eventually you will have a core group of commentors, but for the most part blog readers like to do just that, read.

Thanks Anonymous.

This blog is all over the place in terms of viewers, there is no consistency, other than that the number of page views far exceeds the number of unique visitors each day - probably because once a visitor finds this blog he/she will click on every single commented entry, to read all the comments.

The number of unique visitors on any given day ranges from double digits to many hundreds. It gets e-mailed around a lot.

I should stress that I am NOT looking for a core group of commenters. This blog is intended for artists to discreetly share information on their own direct experiences. I don't expect any single person to comment here more than a handful of times, at most.

BodhiNew York (Gallery on 24th Street showcasing Indian Contemp) will close doors of its NY location on January 31st, 2009. Add it to the RIPper.

Hey, can you clarify the anonymous issue. Can people be outted or sued - as someone claimed - for leaving a negative - or non-positive - anonymous comment? If so, can you make that clear. I have left a comment and now I can't delete it. Please advise.

I think you should add the Cheryl McGinnis Gallery, it has been exhibiting strong artists for three years on the Upper East Side. The owner is extremely personable, everyone, collectors, curators, critics and especially the artists love her. She pays her artists immediately and is always concerned for their well-being. Her gallery is not only surviving but thriving. She is moving the gallery to 38th and 8th in April 09.

please add Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts to the mess

buck,
is there any way have comments viewable chronologically? as an rss feed? right now you have to check the news section, then find the individual gallery/critic etc. from a long list.

I've had a great experience with my Chelsea Gallery. Pay on time, do well with promotion, nice to talk to in person.

It's amazing that Winkelman continues to posture about how artists should be so loyal to dealers when he summarily dumped half of his artists when the market was good. I guess managing them would have distracted effort from working on his stupid blog all day.

Josh, I bought one of your pieces from Tria Gallery at AAFNYC last year! Hope they're treating you well.

M.Y. Art Prospects, while this hardly counts as a gallery; They truly inept. She is so greedy down to the penny, that she cant strike a deal and it ultimately hurts the artist. She loses easy deals!

Doesn't anyone have anything to say about Peter Blum Gallery?

Taylor & Ron Lyon DBA as Lyon & Lyon Fine Art, Gallerie Dalray & Graphite Galleries in New Orleans, LA absconded my work & gave me a check that bounced. They proceeded to close 2 galleries & reopen under a new name. They are doing business as Graphite Galleries in NOLA. Ron Lyon is in the process of opening a gallery in Chicago. Beware, these guys have scammed over twenty artists in the last year.

Why is Zach Feuer not featured on this blog? It seems that artists would have much to say about his gallery.

he is, scroll to the bottom, then click older.

Re Ron Lyon and his son Taylor Lyon in New Orleans. I can attest that these two are selling COPIED ARTWORK. After having to get an attorney to collect payments for unreported sales and to retrieve my artwork, I then discovered Ron Lyon was copying my work and selling it under another name. My attorney contacted both Ron and Taylor Lyon after which Ron Lyon acknowledged the matter and said he was no longer producing this work. However, from all appearances he continues to do so. I have been looking for a way to publicly and anonymously say something about this experience. Thanks for the blog.

Ron Lyon and Taylor Lyon of Graphite Gallery in New Orleans owes a LOT of money to a LOT of artists. They're running with art AND money. Just want to make artists/collectors aware. Current artists represented by Ron Lyon or Taylor Lyon or in Graphite Gallery: BEWARE!

Buck, I hope you don't mind, we love your blog so much we have just created an unauthorized London cousin for it: http://howsmydealinglondon.blogspot.com/

London really could use it.

We're staying true to your philosophy: facts and first-hand comments on professional matters only, not opinions, cheap shots or gossip.

Hope you approve, and that you link us to your page

Could you please add Galleria Glance (located in Torino, It). Shows mostly US based artists. Totally shady. Run away if approached.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, there's a FBI case against Galeria Glance and Nadia Stepanova who owns it to try to recover all of the missing art or money that American artists are owed.

For reference, you can always register lost/stolen/unpaid works of art on the Art Loss Registry.
