puts himself in his own shows. is turning white columns into an art fair ready, hipster hang out as opposed to the support center for emerging artists it used to be.

As anyone with even half a brain knows, Higgs is the best thing to happen to WC in a long time. Lucky for them he's devoted his considerable energy and talent to their cause: expanding their programs, publications, and fundraising. AND art fairs. These days WC is accomplishing ten times as much and getting ten times the exposure.

Sure, he might be getting more exposure and funding, but Higgs is treating White Columns like a commercial gallery. Totally defeats its original purpose, no? Might as well move it to Chelsea and start selling.

higgs is the best thing to happen to wc in years; the commercial aspect is an unavoidable fact at this point, and he negotiates it with grace, and integrity....

Had a studio visit with him once. Weird energy, comes off as arrogant, ones of these people who can't really connect with others well, super awkward. He has done a lot for White Columns, and the shows tend to be varied and exciting, but he seems to be more interested in certain art cliques than actually taking risks with work that is not of his "style". In that way, the space is run like a commercial gallery.

He took off any mention of exhibitions on the White Columns site prior to 2004, the year he started. That is really pathetic. It's like the first 33 years never happened. I was in a curated group show there and now it's treated as irrelevant because it was before his tenure. There used to be a link to the show. He has no sense of history and he mostly shows artists that have commercial galleries and that are already established.

I think the fact that the first two post had to be removed speak for themselves.

For someone that came to New York "to change the art world" he seems to have done remarkable little.

He seems to be capable of hanging on to this little bearucartic empire and convinging the White Columns board to keep him funded.

He puts his "dealer" in shows.

Holland Cotter, and the Whitney (Chrissey Iiles?, or the other one?) lend his 12th generation conceptualist crap "art" legitimacy.

TO THE WHITE COLUMNS BOARD "You've hired an over priced DJ as a director"

He shames the legacy of Lauren Ross, Paul Ha and Bill Arining.

Fire this man!

bn-i think you need to make a category for colin's ghost. this person comments on almost every gallerist. is this really about his/her personal experience? he defends zwirner and rips into higgs. huh? why?

colin's ghost-how do you know what the first 2 comments said? what's your assumption? what’s your personal experience with any of these places? talk about that.

In keeping with the comment about how the pre-Higgs shows were deleted from White Columns' history, its Curated Artist Registry online is now totally neglected and the artists on it can't even update their images anymore. I've also read elsewhere that new submissions to it are ignored.

Lauren Ross, Paul Ha, and Bill Arning were always respectful and took time from their day to say hello when I used show up at White Columns. That means a lot to an artist.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, they might have more funding now but they had more respect before Matthew - why won't he recognize the rich past this institution has?

Anonymous said...

anonymous 4:18 - yes, new submissions to the Curated Arists Registry are ignored. I submitted in October. Nothing. And no responses to my email queries about the status of my application.

Anonymous said...

be prepared to wait at least 2 years for a response to a submission to the online registry, and most likely it will be rejected.

I've known him since his UK days.

He's much more intellectually generous than his persona suggests.

When he took over at White Columns, the place's history weighed too heavy on it. Everyone who'd ever had the vaguest claim on the place felt entitled to a veto and it was just a deathly way to sustain an organization.

He gave it direction again. You might not like it, but it's been consistent with what he's done his whole career. White Columns board must have known what they were getting and credit to them for recognizing they needed it.

I’ve met Matthew Higgs a few times, and he as always been cool to me. He does seem a little awkward, but was always friendly. He remembered who I was and when we met, which for someone in his position is noteworthy. I’m not that important in my small corner of the art world and I always have trouble remembering people and where I know them from.

He’s also been generous, and open to talk. For someone who gets a lot of attention and ink, both positive and negative, I find him to be down to earth and quite approachable.

two red exes?? this seems a bit much. He likes what he likes and sorry if it isn't you. It isn't me either but he has done a lot for people I know and love and he supports a lot of people that need or deserve support. For what he does, he does a great job.

WC an anglo clique and an overprasied minor artist as curator -why is this guy always getting photographed? It'llbe fun to see this context become deperate....

According to my artistic friends, full of attitude and ego. His curating of the Artist Fair in Chicago was not strong and White Columns Registry takes forever to be updated, etc.

As an emerging artist, my friends recommend submitting to Drawing Center and Artist's Space first...

Identity crisis: is he an artist is he a curator?? Is he any good at either?

Anonymous said...

Has ruined White Columns. I used to see almost every show there, now it's just Higgs's friends (who are already established artists) and I couldn't care less.

OMG, probably the biggest douche out there. Is mostly interested in promoting himself, wife Anne Collier and his girlfriend Gavin Brown's program. White Columns has really strayed from it's original statement of purpose. Shame on the WC board of Directors. Higgs has single-handedly made White Column irrelevant.

People have their own trips.
That is what makes it interesting.
These ideas or expectations about art democracies are possibly the most boring things imaginable.
More boring than the air conditioners needed to cool down super computers.
Boredom is a serious crime.
Get over it babies.

Lost in a cul-de-sac of his own design.

Beware if you apply to qualify for his Artist Registry. His site provides the hint that you will wait a while to hear back. Several friends have been waiting for months on end, without any response. Higgs and staff should get their elitist attitude in check.

Why is Ari Marcopoulos getting a White Rooms show? This guy has solo museum shows already under his belt.

It took a few months (four to be exact), but I was recently accepted to White Columns Online Artist Registry...I can imagine the amount of submissions they get is probably pretty insane...

Now, would I be saying something different if I hadn't been accepted? Probably.Definitely! But it wouldn't have been the first time I didn't get a response or was rejected from such a thing. As an artist, you'd better get used to it. Different strokes/different folks (whether biased/skewed politics are present or not).

I'm not sure what will come of it, but I do appreciate Matthew Higgs' and his colleagues time to review the work.

I have not set foot in there since he took over. Boring shows and lost the thread of the old days. Don't know Higgs, don't care. WC use to be one of "the" places to see good work and meet good people, no more. sad.
Does anyone even look at the "artists files." Anyone ever get contacted? Anyone ever shown at WC through the files?
