Be careful if you ever buy from Phillips. Their policy is to not release the work to the buyer until the check has cleared. But they do not inform the buyer once the check has cleared, so the buyer is left wondering when the work can be picked up/delivered. I was unaware of this and waited and waited for some notice from them that it was ok to have the work delivered. About a month after I'd sent them a check, I finally called and was told that my work had been waiting for me and that, because it had been stored by them for more than 30 days, I owed them a daily storage fee for each day the piece had been sitting there.

they promise sellers high estimates, then fail to sell the work. only sell with them if it's your last option.

my painting just sold for four times the estimate in the recent contemporary auction......being the artist, i watched from a distance, but the painting sold, my first at auction. i don't think one can blame p de pury for a piece not selling, blame the artist; the truth hurts.

They're amazing to work for, however, especially among the auction houses. Many of their lower-level staff complain, but they don't realize what a nightmare working for a gallery can be. A+++

I interned there, had a blast and learned a ton. I don't know what it's like to buy from them, but in my experience they work really hard to please their clients.

the previous comment appears to be a little naive..no auction house sends you a notice that your check has cleared. but all auction houses on their invoice and/or purchase agreement state how many days you have to pay for your work and when it must be picked up before being charged for storage. this is standard and typical

so i dont think this beware is proper - what people should CARAEFUL about is not knowing and or reading conditions of sale by auction houses - ignorance may be bliss but in the art world this can cost u a lot - i am not here to defend phillips but can say that i have puchased many things from them and sold many things - they may be disorganized - but they have never dont anything in my personal experience with unethical purchases.

I have never had a sale go well with PdP. I would recommend using only as your last option. They also take their time getting payment to you, last time it took them 40 days (5 days beyond their contractual limit) to send me payment for my sold works, and this was only after several badgering phone calls.
