Are those my only two choices? Can I be Robert Hughes, or Dave Hickey?
At least my man Finch has the cajones to express his opinions, right or wrong, good or bad, and put his name right out there in the open. 'Course some people are going to get offended, that's the nature of the game.
If no one could express their point-of-view as fearlessly and flamboyantly as good ol Charlie does, the art world would be a very boring place. Might resemble something more like a golf club in Palm Springs, or Disneyland.
I consider Finch more an essayist than a critic really. He connects the dots in a very personal and opinionated way, never implying a fact outside his own truth. I always read what he writes - doesn't matter whether I agree or not. The pieces are short enough to absorb and move on. I like his directness.
Charley Finch, Is the only art critic I know who tells the readers what he is buying for his own art collection--How unethical. He is trying to effect the market. I really don't care if he went to Andover or not--and am not interested in reading abt his prep school days.
sometimes entertaining but totally shallow and enthralled by appearances both male and female. once he told me, without knowing my work and with no sense of Irony, that i'd do well "because I have a good look" (i'm a guy)
Charlie is a New York institution. His short blurbs at art-net (can’t really call them essays or reviews) are brief enough to skim, juicy enough to savor and, if need be, abbreviated enough to forget. Seems to stir up more controversy with fewer words than anybody writing in New York these days. Even if he drives you nuts, you still can’t miss his column
I don't always agree with Finch, but I do respect his opinions. I think most people don't like him because he is an outspoken person, just like most of the other Coagula writers.
I have read Charlie Finch since the Coagula days and always grabbed a handful of them for friends. I looked forward to reading the gossipy news - often what is gossipy is also the inner workings of the art-tribe. Even today on ArtNet, I immediately read his articles when they are posted. Yes he can be infuriating, sexist, and then not sexist, unpredictable, and then the opposite. But always refreshing and straightforward.
I don't think it's fair to comment on Finch's appearance, hygiene or taste in art. But this guy wrote a nasty blurb about my show BEFORE IT WAS EVEN HUNG!
What's that about? criticism is criticism but c'mon.

Charlie isn't a critic. He's just a gross old man. If he didn't have artnet, he'd be Steve Kaplan.
Charlie's a hell a of a lot more savvy than most of the players out there. Esp this first commentator. Give us a call when u grow the fuck up.
anony 5:11. Are you Charlie or Walter Robinson? No else on the planet would defend the nasty Finch.

Maybe it already does.

If you can't get Roberta.
Get Charlie.
It says something about the person being defended or lauded when all of their supporters decide to remain anonymous.

I like that he is upfront about who he is buying and getting gifts from.

He just a harmless blogger. There no art career Charlie Finch can point to and say he made them or break them. Harmless blogger.

Charlie Finch is abrasive and thankfully so. I know artists care that he cares. I'm an artist and he rocks!

He is the Rush Limbaugh of the art world.
Who are "Dealer A" and "Dealer B" in Charlie's latest Artnet.com article, 'Blind On Blind'? Anyone know?
