Is this a cooperative gallery? My sense is that artists have to be members and pay dues. Nothing wrong with that, but, Buck, could you make a distinction between commercial and cooperative? Thanks.

You don't have to a member to show there. Group shows often include non-affiliated artists selected by exhibition curators.

I believe the Painting Center is a foundation created by several individuals with a deep commitment to painting including among others, Cecily Kahn.

As far as I know there is no membership required, and they’ve allowed a diverse group of people to curate shows there. There’s a base group of likeminded artists who are shown more often, but if you’re interested or have an idea for a good painting show, you should go in and talk, they are very approachable so long as it’s about painting.

I've both exhibited and curated shows at The Painting Center and the experience was really positive. Their intentions are the absolute best. The staff and board membership were exceedingly helpful in helping raise funds for the shows.

I have been in a couple of group shows here. They have members but I am not one. The director is very efficent and everything is handled with the utmost professionalism. There is a genuine interest in the work shown. I would definitely exhibit here again if asked.
