RIP...last year some time. I miss the eccentric space and odd ball opening but they were an unreliable sort...made artists famous but had a hard time paying them.
Well it's not that easy. They fled Cologne years ago since they owed money to everyone. Then they re-opened their amazing space in New York with Klemens Gasser parents' money. For a while it was fun working with them but due to Tanja Grunert's absolute inability to run a business they managed to fall back in the old Cologne scheme. After a while they owed money to everyone again. The employees I met there over time were all completely frustrated and even had to help out with their personal money. Tanja Grunert can be nice but on the other hand she can be a completecholeric person. When winning a trial against them it was impossible to claim the money through a bank subpoena since they had this lady working at Citibank in Chelsea who'd always warn them in time so they cleared out their account. The only thing that lets me hope is that the judgement is good for 20 years, so maybe one day... It's really sad that they managed to be so unsuccessful with this great location and the good artists they once had. If you consider working with them: DON'T!!!!
I had some experience with Tanja before, it's horrible. I cannot believe she could reopen her gallery again and still runs it. She owes so much money to many people (includes me)but at same time she can still spend all other people's money to live like a queen. The space is deserved better art and better gallery ownership.
Tanja spent her childhood in Boeblingen (near Stuttgart) and her father had sth to do with the local government. Somebody here describes her as choleric, I remember her as a tomboyish/boisterous, intelligent young person, full of energy. Obviously I've met Tanja a looong time ago and we were friends back then, and at one time our lives went into different directions and I lost contact. I thought she'd got married to a fine young American man back then, but I could be wrong. Amazing to read about her here.
I had a nightmare show with Tanja Grunert too. Never got paid by her of course, and she kept all the work. So, take heed, never ever show with her as you ceratinly won't be paid !

klemens and tanja "had trouble" paying anyone they "did business with". so sorry to see them belly up.
Gasser Grunert Gallery is open and running again at their old spot at 524 W 19th street across from Zwirner.
Good. When they reopen, we can come in there and demand the money they owe. Can't wait.

Tanja has a vision. Her space is amazing, but it's true she's a little nuts, and getting paid is tough.
I've had no complaints with them and they pay on time. Solid gallery that works hard for it's artists.
Does anyone know where Tanja came from? I know she is German, but where was she born...spend her childhood?
