Katelijne De Backer lied in an interview telling me a great gallery I had asked about had been accepted because of their "strong programming", when in fact they had been wait listed because the organization thought their booth had too much stuff in it, and only recently accepted after someone dropped out. The gallery didn't want to be identified so she got away with it.

anonymous 12:39 am doesn't seem to understand how the selection process at the fair works. debacker doesn't pick the galleries, a committee of other gallerists does.

First comment July 18 a naive perception of what a person in DeBacker's role is supposed to do. I worked there many years ago and she is actually a very nice person and keeps it all under control considering the egos involved. There is such a thing as confidentiality. Imagine if she would just spill out details re: galleries that are not your own to competing dealers, etc...she would no longer be there today. Hers is not a role for the big-mouthed, she is absolutely discreet. Also, please consider that the Armory show was founded by dealers, not Swiss perfection machines. The Armory show had something at the beginning, then it didn't... tables turned once Art Basel started Miami...and the Armory show lost some of its initial cachet.

Roberta Smith wrote about my work at the Armory (from a small gallery in Brooklyn), i'm not the only one, but it matters. it matters.

What the fuck is it with artists listng on their bios a group show, when they are actually refering to a presentation at an artfair? Don't they realize how weak this looks? Is this desperation, or a sign of the importance of market? Can you imagine only having on bio artfairs??? Laughable ony if wasn't so disturbing

the list of galleries for 2010 is long. I wonder how 250 dealers can all do well at the fair, it probably needs to shrink for the good of the exhibitors.

The fair has been terrible ever since MMPI bought it. It is a circus not an artfair. The VIP program is trite and so called 'educational program' is so boring. The list of galleries participating lately is not exactly top-notch.

I completely agree with this. Listing artfairs under group shows on a bio looks pathetic to me as well. However once I had someone looking at my cv and exclaim snootlty oh, you have never been in any ART FAIRS? As if this made my resume worthless. I told her I had been in many but they just seem like silly cramped markets that don't seem worth mentioning. Even Basel Switzerland often does good work a diservice. As for the Cologne Fair, I think it is improving.
