HI there, thanks for the site, I love it and check it regularly. I have also posted. One thing I noticed ishow many comments there are re: "too many male artists" or "not friendly towards women". Which made me realize that you could have a category for lack of diversity or "banana vs. no banana" as per the Guerilla Girls...this is a place where people will talk as long as they are anon...I think that's a huge, huge issue in the artworld and people should be held accountable for that. (See comments re: Bob Nickas, Dalrymple, Momim for example and a bunch of others I don't remember...

I can't believe Christian Haye's The Project is not in this list! Tons of gossip there. And how about adding Tyler Green to the list?

Buck Naked said...

Added everything except Tyler Green. Is there a reason he should be added? I don't think he reviews or curates much contemporary art in New York.

Anonymous said...

haunch of venision, should be added, as well as a death watch page like they have on eater.com so we can see who is likely to go out soon.

Buck Naked said...

Added: Haunch of Venison, Von Lintel, Rachel Uffner, Collette Blanchard, Andreas Grimm, Moeller Snow, Southfirst.

DeathWatch is a good idea, thanks.

I'm an artist in new york, making a living from sales for twelve years in a major gallery. I've posted a few times, if I know the subject personally. I notice that you get a lot of envy-based comments, or they seem that way. I admire the scope of your project but fear that you might of bitten off more than you can chew. The level of professional bitterness out here is amazing. I have heard numerous rumors about myself that are incredibly false. I will continue to post as I also think it's a great idea. thanks and keep it up!

In law, defamation (also called calumny, libel, slander, and vilification) is the communication of a statement that makes a false claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual, business, product, group, government or nation a negative image. Slander refers to a malicious, false, and defamatory spoken statement or report, while libel refers to any other form of communication such as written words or images. Most jurisdictions allow legal actions, civil and/or criminal, to deter various kinds of defamation and retaliate against groundless criticism. Related to defamation is public disclosure of private facts which arises where one person reveals information which is not of public concern, and the release of which would offend a reasonable person. "Unlike libel, truth is not a defence for invasion of privacy."

False light laws are "intended primarily to protect the plaintiff's mental or emotional well-being."If a publication of information is false, then a tort of defamation might have occurred. If that communication is not technically false but is still misleading then a tort of false light might have occurred.

- the owner of this blog should keep a close eye out for slander and libel. there are a lot of generalized slanderous remarks allowed to be posted. slander will eventually kill this blog.

you should delete all generalized slander, closely monitor future slander, and encourage specific accounts of experiences had with specific galleries.

Buck Naked said...

Bloggers cannot be hit with libel suits on the basis of anonymous postings on their Web sites because federal law grants them immunity by explicitly stating that they cannot be treated as the "publisher" of such comments.

i wanted to say the premise of the website is really invaluable and I appreciate what your trying to do.

Hearing artists other artists bitch to me about their galleries not paying and then having to front to the world that they are doing good and that the gallery is doing good, well its good to finally have a place to really out this practice and hopefully safeguard artists from being robbed by dealers.

Even if you can not control all the contents of the posts, it seems looking over the entries that the number of entries for galleries that don't pay or with people who are difficult, the message gets out. The galleries that were not paying my friends are indeed being talked about for that here. The dealers of my friends who are difficult, act unprofessionally, who I have seen be difficult-are indeed commented on for those qualities. pretty much to a T.

artists, unless they are on-inner circle tracks would not know what they are walking in to. I was hoping for a site like this. It will take a lot of the wolves out of the shadows. Then you can make your own decision to deal with them still if you can afford the costs. And some people can.

one of the galleries that closed without paying artists in the last year- I was thinking of showing with, had studio visits lined up. Because I am leveraging everything to make art, showing with them and then not getting paid could have sunk my whole boat.

seems a lot of dealers defend themselves for non-payment as being altruistic for just showing your work.

They also bitch about their overhead to artists and to me. I have told one dealer who went under who was asking artists to give him money for rent when he had millions in his pocket-that 'sure-your artists should help pay for your rent, and then you can help pay for their art school education, their studio, electrical, studio time, materials, books, study time, museum time, time sitting there listening to their dealer say they have no money to give over the half of the sales price they embezzled on the work they sold.'

glad that your putting up this blog

Cheryl McGinnis Gallery, she is so supportive of her artists. She genuinely cares about them. She pays them immediately, several times she even paid them before she was paid by a client. Her gallery point of view is relevant, she represents many Chinese artists, has been integral in the success of artist Zhang Hongtu, she exhibits more women artists than maybe anyone. I have been showing with her for several years, and just love her. She is moving from the Upper East Side to 38th Street in the next two months. She maybe one of the few galleriest who continue to make sales in this economic downturn. I just received a check from her from a piece she sold 2 weeks ago! She is committed to the growth of her gallery and the success of her artists.

I am writing to you to ask if a label/post could be set up for New Orleans dealings?
This would be great as the city is experiencing a "new birth".

please post a New Orleans section.

I don't think the site needs an overhaul, It works fine now that you've added the "recent comments" in the sidebar. Maybe you could increase to 10 or so instead of 5. That combined with linking of the most recent at the bottom of the multi-colored list works great. Maybe people aren't seeing the new sidebar. I think the blog is a real asset to collectors. Nice work, thanks!

I wish we had a site like this for London ! But luckily everyone in London knows enough about Fred Mann and his gallery FRED to shun thieving thugs like him and his kind. No one in New York could possibly be as evil as Fred Mann. How many artists in New York are threatened with violence when they dare ask for their money ? Fred Mann is notorious throughout London as the gallerist who never pays his artists and then threatens to ruin their personal reputations if they should dare to take him to court. But as he still shamelessly shows his face at international Art Fairs then I guess it's not inappropriate to warn artists on this forum.

Wonder if it would be possible to have a "Hows my Exhibiting"? - Dealers talking trash (or love) about artists. It would never work...it would be too easy to figure out who's talking smack. ??

Anonymous said...

The whole point of this site is that dealers and to a lesser extent curators have been able to be, up to this point, pretty opaque about their dealings. They are also in a position of power over most artists. This site does something to rectify that.

Futhermore, there is already a forum for "hows my exhibiting"...it's called art criticism.

I hope you would consider putting art foundations and artists estates on here. There are many of these places where artists work and the conditions there are rarely discussed. Some of them work very closely with galleries and could have insight into those relations. ie: Andy Warhol Foundation, Cue Art Foundation, Dedalus Foundation, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, DeKooning Foundation, Chinati, Calder Foundation, Pollock/Krasner Foundation, The Roy Lichtenstein Foundation.

How about NY Gallery tours? http://www.nygallerytours.com/ Raphael, the guy who runs it, outs gay and lesbian artists. Ask around. He gets belligerent when demanding to know if an artist is gay or staight from gallery personel. He used to write for the Blade. Look into what he charges for these "tours."

Anonymous said...

Yes, add a section on art shippers. There is some real dish on what goes on at these art fairs...

kelli said...

While I enjoy gossip I don't want to get in to contradicting other comments.
However I will put in my two cents regarding Raphael (Risemberg) of gallerytours and the New York Blade based on personal experience. He was nice enough to include me in a not entirely positive but very fair review. He wasn't belligerent with the staff at my gallery. They gave him my e-mail and he asked me very politely himself if I identified as "gay, straight, bi, queer, pansexual or other" and how I would like to be referred to. He was pretty consistent about remembering to refer to me as bi. In reviews of other artists he has used whatever terms they wish like "queer but not exclusively homosexual". He's actually unusually decent in regards to respecting the right to self identify in terms of gender and orientation. When I searched the Blade's archives virtually all mentions of bisexual people were pretty negative. There was a snarky obituary about Susan Sontag being closeted, an article on the "down low" (a racist media construction long since debunked by Keith Boykin and others) and an article on bisexual men as vectors of disease transmission. Sadly this isn't unusual with LGBT publications. So if anything he went out on a limb to include me and to treat me with respect.
I've also never heard of him outing anyone. There are certainly some straight male artists who were gay for pay early in their careers when it helped them make career connections. I've never heard of him outing people like that. As far as I know he only covered people who were openly LGBT and if anything he made an unusual effort to be both fair and inclusive.

New Gallery / Thom Andriola in Houston, Texas is to be avoided. He's a skilled and amazing sociopath - makes the artist feel like the stupid, wrong one. NOTE: He preys mostly on old artists and women.
