Anton is great, and so are the directors, Christoph and Michael. This is one of the best galleries in New York, Anton has supported artists for a long time who weren't necessarily collector's favorites as many of them are now.
I can't believe the comment re: Koenig which is worded as if it came from some intimate knowledge...when in fact it was obviously from the LK New Yorker article. Yeah, dude, you sure can imagine how Anton "feels"...hmmm. Do you have a crush on him? Are you psychic? Wow, you know it all, huh. Wink wink.
Anton sure can hold his own ground and should be widely credited for running an excellent program with artists who have been with the gallery a long time. Great relationships with curators as well as collectors.
Anton got his start from his rich father George Baselitz (legal name in Germany is George Kern). He is represented in Paris by Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery (while Ropac also markets his own selfmade-artworks using the fantasy name Julius Deutschbauer (="German farmer") and plans to exhibit his work at Anton Kern and Leo Koenig galleries. Go to: www.ropac.net and lookup gallery artists: George Baselitz and Julius Deutschbauer (J.B. has no date of birth, no biography or other information).
There are lots of people with money out there, not that many with vision. Also AK's brother is also a dealer in Cologne, not quite as "edgy". Big deal. The gallery ROCKS. Why do people use this thread to compare him to other galleries. I have seen German tourists accross the street point to the gallery and comment "Son of Baselitz" to each other so I can see why he chose to come to NYC and do it on his own terms. Which he has and has done well. Don't be a hater for that reason. Money does not buy vision or class or the ability to put together an outfit, all of which AK has.
Awesome staff, but he's a tyrant. Have seen or heard him lambast his employees loudly in the gallery on more than one occasion. You can hear him throw childish temper-tantrums, and threaten everyone with layoffs if you just go in there. An alright program but an abusive power-freak at the top.
Rat Fink searching for Scuz Finks, Gold Finks.

Is this true?
Are there some facts to back this up?
Dude, do you know how to use google? Yes, it's true.
Yes, and imagine how he must have felt when his dad went to Koenig to sell some art.
Ahh . . . the complexities of these family businesses.
But a fine fine gallery.
Better light and space than Leo.
Anton Kern is brilliant, as is his program. Baselitz or not.

i have been there a million times, am friendly with Christoph (one of his directors) and have never seen him berate anyone.
one of the top 3 galleries in NYC.
Great gallerist. Great roster. His artists love him and his staff is very loyal...that says alot. (I'm friends with a few of his artists.)
Also, I don't understand why people find it weird if he doesn't rep his father. How would that benefit either of them?
