I’ve never claimed to be a “critic”, other folks have designated me as such But when I see people I know being trashed, I feel the need to put in my two cent worth to try and balance the conversation.
By the way your comments are very insightful and well written, would you like a back rub?
James Kalm is a wonderful resource for those of us who love Art. his Kalm Report is invaluable to me...his casual dialogue is informative and a real treat. He covered my first solo show in Manhattan and i was honoured:)
As someone that doesn't live in the city I appreciate that James Kalm gives me an opportunity to just see the art instead of trying to tell me whether I should like it or not.
One of my favorite art critics/videographers of all time, Mr. Kalm is an incredible spirit and very devoted to helping artists. A man of his word, he showed at my first solo show at envoy enterprises a few weeks ago upon invitation despite his tight schedule.
Also, he generously just completed an introduction to my forthcoming artist's (photo)book about the show. His willingness to spend time with others is unprecedented and his tireless promotion of all types of galleries, not just blue-chip ones (hearie hearie NYT) plus his brilliant writing for Brooklyn Rail is incredible. I really love his democratic approach and his battle against boring artspeak in his matter-of-fact talk. In fact, I bet more people love contemporary art because of his video work.
Under his alter ego, he also has some awesome and thoughtful paintings (a must see at Dam, Stuhltrager) as well as a huge dose of humor and genius. And a wonderful eye. Was the first to spot the smashing William Powhida in his early days.
All around, James Kalm IS the example to emulate. I dig and approve this message.

Extremely generous to do what he does as "the guy on the bike." Decent, approachable, knowledgeable.
James Kalm has not a thing critical to say as he butters up every critic on here. Where does that leave his critic status?

I'm with anonymous, October 16. Kalm's reporting is an invaluable resource--for me and for my students.
