Love her, or hate her, she stands at the very pinnacle of art criticism. I don’t always agree with her “picks to click” but when I start to do research on the New York art world, its amazing how ubiquitous Roberta Smith is. I appreciate her straight ahead style (hell I’ve barrowed enough of it) and her avoidance of fashionable theory and politics that for me spells the death of any good review. Considering her rate of production (a couple of reviews a week) her consistency over the decades is inspiring. A critic’s critic.
Back when I used to work at an uptown contemporary art gallery we all would panic when she arrived. But actually she was always cordial, and whenever she gave us a bad review we deserved it!
Of all the NY Times critics, her opinion is the one that artists really care about.
Roberta Smith is a fucking idiot. Sure she sees a lot of shows and is prolific, but her writing and insight into art is ridiculous. Describing what a piece or show looks like doesn't equate critical thinking or writing. I'm honestly surprised that she has the position she has based on the extremely poor quality of her writing. Of the many bad calls I can think of off hand: gushing about Mark Grotjahn's recent show.... Gagosian must have been giving kickbacks because this work is so backwards looking and surface level that no critic I respect has ever acknowledged this work. Similarly, Glowing reviews of Sterling Ruby (ok, I guess, but really?), Jonas Wood (makes paintings of baseball cards), and Matt Chambers (are you fucking kidding me?). Not to mention a recent piece on Todd Levin's show at uptown Boesky? Todd is great, but considering what is actually going on in NY that this is being reviewed is ridiculous. I could go on and on....

Hey Buck. Could you remove that last Roberta post I added. Overly harsh and would prefer it not to be out there after more thought. Thank you.
